LIGHT INTENSITY:
To measure the light intensity of the mangrove environment, a 'lux meter' was used- as shown in the left picture. Students were required to hold to meter to the ground, whilst pressing the button that began taking measurements of the light intensity within that area. The equipment undergoes several readings of the amount on light present, and then makes an average measurement that was written down by the students. |
The results show that the light intensity of this particular area was 183 lux. It was evident that this recording was not within the average rand of
400-600 lux.
400-600 lux.
SALINITY: The salinity of water refers to the amount of salt that is present. Different organisms within the mangrove ecosystem are required to adapt to the varying levels of salinity. These levels however, do differ, depending on recent rainfall and the water that enters the river from the ocean. A salinity meter was used to measure the level of salt within the particular environment. |
The salinity level recorded in this environment was recorded as 21.3 ppk, which was within the average range of 15-35 ppk.
